Hsinchu, December 19, 2024 - The National Council for Sustainable Development (the NCSD) held the 2024 National Sustainable Development Awards ceremony on December 19 to recognize companies that help foster Taiwan’s sustainable development with innovative approaches. Wistron NeWeb Corp (WNC) received a National Sustainable Development Award in the corporation category. Taiwan Premier, Cho Jung-tai, presented the award to Molly Lin, WNC’s CSO and Spokesperson, at the ceremony. A total of 162 educational entities, corporations, civic organizations and government agencies took part in the Awards this year. Participants were classified into four categories and selected through three stages. Only 12 companies were awarded in the corporation category, among which WNC is the sole network communications company.
To incorporate ESG concepts into its business decisions and corporate culture, WNC has formulated short-, mid-, and long-term goals and action plans according to five sustainability themes that correspond to SDGs: green initiatives, empowerment, trust, innovation, and growth. In addition, the Company is committed to international initiatives such as SBTi, RE100, CDP, TCFD and the TNFD Forum. Based on SBTi methodologies, WNC has set a target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% (base year: 2022) and Scope 3 emissions by 25% (base year: 2023) by 2030. In accordance with RE100, the company is hoping to achieve 100% renewable energy use by 2040 and net zero emissions by 2050. An emissions inventory of Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHGs has been completed across our factories worldwide and was verified by a third party. In 2023, our scope 1 and 2 emissions declined by over 10% compared to 2022. WNC has also made considerable progress with regard to renewable energy use, waste recycling and water management. In 2023, our renewable energy use reached 16% with an 87% waste recycling rate while our water usage intensity was 27% lower than that of 2020, all of which surpassed our goals. The Company is also committed to reducing products’ environmental impact throughout the entire lifecycle by establishing a carbon emissions database for different components, introducing low-carbon material selection and carbon management systems, and optimizing low-carbon processes and green product design.
On the front of corporate governance, WNC has diversified its Board of Directors. More than a third of our board members are female and the compensation of senior managers is linked with their sustainability performance. This year, the Sustainable Development Committee became a unit directly under the Board to strengthen our sustainability management. Inside the company, WNC incorporates DEI into its business operations to create a workplace where employees can feel safe, and encourages employees to communicate and make innovative proposals. As for public welfare, WNC continues to carry out different projects to provide care for children, land, and smallholder farmers, including English and STEAM courses, support for rural areas, smallholder development facilitation and reforestation. With regard to supplier management, WNC has formulated a Global Supply Chain Management Policy and introduced EcoVadis to evaluate sustainability risks for over 100 key suppliers. The Company has become a member of the RBA, a means to create a comprehensive sustainable supply chain and bring positive influence to society.
In 2024, WNC has received many awards from home and abroad in recognition of its sustainability performance. Apart from the National Sustainable Development Award, WNC was also listed in TIME Magazine’s World’s Best Companies in Sustainable Growth 2025 while receiving the Asia-Pacific Sustainability Action Award, the Sustainable Leading Enterprise in Healthy Workforce Award, Top 100 Exemplary Companies in Sustainability Award, Platinum Medal in Corporate Sustainability Report Awards category, and Social Inclusion Leadership Award at the 2024 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards, and a bronze medal in the GCSA Sustainability Reporting Awards.
