WNC Joins RE100, Sets Goal of 100% Renewable Electricity by 2040

Hsinchu, August 7, 2023 – Wistron NeWeb Corporation (WNC) announced today that it has become a member of RE100, making it the 29th RE100 member from Taiwan and the first network communications company in Taiwan to join the initiative. WNC has pledged to achieve 100% renewable electricity usage across all its sites by 2040.

Headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan, WNC has offices or manufacturing sites in Taiwan, Vietnam, China, the U.S., the UK, Germany, and Japan. As each of these countries have different electricity regulations and standards, WNC’s goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity presents a challenge and also an opportunity. WNC’s Chairman Haydn Hsieh stressed, "Joining RE100 is an important milestone in WNC's low-carbon transformation, and we will work with our suppliers and customers to create a low-carbon ecosystem for our industry."

WNC’s President & CEO Jeffrey Gau added, “Over 96% of WNC’s carbon emissions come from the generation of the electricity we consume, which is why in recent years we have been increasing the ratio of renewable energy usage.” In 2022, the combined renewable energy usage across WNC’s global locations reached 6.65%, and as of the end of July this year solar panels have been installed across all WNC production sites. These solar panels generated around 2,575,838 kWh of electricity in 2022, and it is estimated that about 2.5 times this amount will be generated in 2023, helping the company reach its goal of 10% renewable energy usage for the year. In the future, WNC’s strategy will revolve around power generation for self-use, purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or signing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with electricity suppliers. Annual targets to gradually increase the use of renewables will be set, aiming to reach 100% renewable energy usage by 2040.

As network communications technologies and applications have evolved in recent years, WNC now provides whole-range communications solutions covering 5G edge infrastructure, satellite broadband, LEO satellite communications, enterprise networking devices, automotive connectivity, smart home, smart meters, smart automotive technologies, EVs and smart factories. At the same time, the company is leveraging its expertise in antenna, RF design, and system integration to conduct software and hardware integration and provide customers with more efficient smart systems and services, which will help them enhance operational performance and reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, WNC is committed to green product design and provides customers with carbon footprint information on its products. By adopting science-based methodologies, WNC aims to lay the foundation for carbon reduction in product design and collaborate with global customers in environmental initiatives.

WNC’s Chief Sustainability Officer Molly Lin noted, "WNC has been deeply involved in network communications for many years, and WNC’s well-earned reputation plays a key role in the establishing of partnerships in upstream and downstream segments. We hope that our participation in RE100 will help drive the network communications industry and supply chain in Taiwan to establish a mutually beneficial and sustainable industry environment. We will continue to focus on low-carbon, green design strategies and technologies to become a reliable sustainability partner for our customers around the globe."
