WNC Joins SBTi; Commits to Becoming Net-Zero Enterprise

Hsinchu, August 22, 2023 – Wistron NeWeb Corporation (WNC) is proud to announce that it has signed the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitment letter and will work with suppliers and customers to create a low-carbon ecosystem for the industry as part of efforts to limit global temperature increase to within 1.5 °C, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
In recent years, WNC has put in a lot of effort into implementing corporate sustainability practices. To address climate change, apart from setting science-based targets, WNC has also become a member of RE100 and added its signature to the TCFD official website to support the TCFD initiative. WNC’s Chief Sustainability Officer Molly Lin noted “We cannot ignore climate change and the threat it poses to our planet. We must accelerate our efforts in creating a low-carbon industry chain, with the ultimate goal being to achieve net-zero emissions.”
The SBTi is a collaboration between the CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The mission of this initiative is to develop tools and guidelines as well as provide technical support to enable businesses to set carbon reduction targets.
To respond to SBTi’s call for urgent action regarding climate change, WNC has set near-term and net-zero targets in accordance with SBTi criteria. Using 2022 as the base year, WNC aims to achieve a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
WNC’s strategy for reducing Scope 2 emissions revolves around increasing its use of renewable energy. Specific action items include green power generation for self-use, purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) or signing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with electricity suppliers. Annual targets to gradually increase the use of renewables will be set, aiming to reach 100% renewable energy usage by 2040.
Established in 2022, WNC’s Sustainable Development Committee works in concert with the company’s top-tier managers to formulate sustainable development strategies, plans and targets, with the ultimate goal being to establish a mutually beneficial and sustainable industry environment. Prior to signing the SBTi commitment letter, the Committee had already listed science-based reduction targets as one of its key ESG indicators. Through leveraging advanced R&D capabilities to develop more efficient products and services, using renewable materials, and implementing a supplier management mechanism and product carbon footprint project, WNC is doing its part in reducing emissions, and we hope that in the future our supply chain partners in the network communications industry can also join the SBTi, so together we can work toward reducing emissions and establishing a low-carbon ecosystem for the industry.
About SBTi
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi’s Net-Zero Standard is the world’s first net-zero corporate standard, and the goal of this standard aligns with the recommendation set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
